Kerrisdale, an older neighborhood of Vancouver, wraps itself along English Bay from near downtown, west towards the open ocean and the University of British Columbia campus. Many of the homes, built at the turn of the century, are renovated and neatly landscaped with mature hedges and manicured lawns.

Mason mounted the steps to the veranda, yawning. A young woman's face peered at him through the window curtains.

"Good morning." Mason tried to be jovial. He held his RCMP identification to the window pane. "My name is Mason."

Janice Scallet read the identification and then looked into his face, comparing his picture. She made no moves to open the door.

Mason looked at his picture, smiled and returned the wallet to his pocket.

She released the curtains and opened the door.

"Mind if I ask you a few questions?"

Janice shrugged. "I told the other police officers what I knew.” She leaned against the doorway jamb. "I haven't put together a list of missing items yet.” She motioned at the debris that was once her living room. "It'll take me a little more time to figure that out.” She examined him. "Are you here to take fingerprints?"

"Most burglars wear gloves.” He shrugged. "Mind if I come in?"

She stepped aside and Mason entered the living room. He cleared a space on one of the sofas and sat down.

. "Nice," he said, running his hand across the leather.

Janice, wearing a pair of faded denim pants and a loose fitting, untucked cotton shirt, collapsed into a love seat.

Mason tugged his pencil from the spine of his notebook and then flipped it open to a blank page. "Your complaint said the men who drugged you spoke Russian?” He cleared his throat. "Are you sure?"

Janice squinted. "I'm sure."

"How were you drugged again?"

"One of them was on top of me. He was pinning down my arms. The other talked to him in Russian and then covered my mouth and nose with a cloth. It was soaked in ether."

"You're sure it was ether?"

Janice scowled.

"So, they drugged you with something and then ransacked the house. Your complaint says you think you met the men who did it a few days ago."

Janice nodded. "I was approached by a restauranteur named Lukhov on a pretext to discuss his account. I'm a marketing consultant and I do some advertising," she said. "When I got to Mr Lukhov's restaurant though, I discovered that what they wanted to see me about had nothing to do with advertising."

"Why did they get in touch then?"

She laughed. "You won't believe it."

Mason smiled.

"Mr Lukhov introduced me to his partner. A man from Moscow. He said he was asked to deliver a letter that proved my grandmother was the illegitimate daughter of an inventor named Tesla. He also gave me the name and address of a man in California he claimed was my uncle and some airline tickets to go see him. It was sort of an unofficial state apology for not making the letter public earlier.” She looked into Mason's eyes. "I know you'll think I'm crazy, but he convinced me, you know? I went to California and met the guy.
